SCREAMIN’ EAGLE NHRA TEAM CONTINUES COMPETITIVE TESTING EFFORTS

Team Remains Confident of Potential as Technical Gains are Achieved in Georgia  MILWAUKEE - (May 6, 2002) The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock Bike drag racing team continued to make technical advances during the NHRA Summit Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga., this weekend.  Although the team did not qualify for the Sunday show, they remain confident of the potential of the program to become competitive in the series.

Cold, rainy conditions hampered the entire event and shortened Pro Stock Bike qualifying to just three rounds.  After a first round mechanical, the Screamin’ Eagle Team netted a second round qualifying effort of 7.644 seconds at 166.48 MPH and a third round time of 7.619 seconds at 167.18 MPH.  The “bump” to make Sunday’s show was a 7.349 elapsed time (E.T.).

“We gained a lot of valuable knowledge this weekend.  The team has been busy working through technical issues, including tuning the new electronic fuel injection system,” said Mike Kennedy, director of Harley-Davidson Parts and Accessories Marketing.  “We solved some of the issues which are expected in an all-new program, and we gained insight into others.  Obviously, we have a long way to go to achieve our goals of qualifying and becoming competitive in this field. But we’re confident we have the best in the business working on this program.”

The team will continue testing in preparation for the Matco Tools SuperNationals in Englishtown, N.J. on May 16-19.

Angelle Savoie won the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals Pro Stock Bike final aboard her CEVC Racing Suzuki with a .402 reaction time and a 7.162 E.T. at 187.91 MPH.

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE NHRA PRO STOCK DRAG RACING TEAM FOCUSSED ON TESTING

Team Forgoes NHRA O’Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston to Continue Development Efforts

MILWAUKEE - (April 11, 2002) The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock Bike drag racing team will remain focussed on extensive testing and development efforts and; as a result; will not compete at the NHRA O’Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston, Texas, on April 11-14, 2002.  The Screamin’ Eagle team made its debut at the NHRA Mac Tools Gator Nnationals in Gainesville, Fla., in March, setting the quickest V-Twin run in NHRA Pro Stock history.

“We know what the benchmark is to qualify for an NHRA Pro Stock National and we knew this wouldn’t be an easy mountain to climb.  The team has been working non-stop since Gainesville to solve the technical issues that kept us from making the show,” said Mike Kennedy, director of marketing for Harley-Davidson Parts and Accessories.  “We are committed to our goal of becoming the first V-Twin to qualify, to make a final and to win.  We have the best minds in the business working on our program and we expect to make progress through continued development.”

Screamin’ Eagle team rider GT Tonglet, who recently turned 19, remains confident.  “I know Byron Hines and the team are hard at work on this and I can’t wait for the next race,” he said.

BARNES WINS BUELL LIGHTNING SERIES RACE AT DAYTONA

Defending Champ Holds Off Bemisderfer by .042 Seconds in Soggy Season Opener

DAYTONA, FLA. (March 12, 2002) - Michael Barnes kicked off the season at Daytona International Speedway in defending championship form, after he nabbed the pole position and the victory in the opening round of the Formula USA Buell Lightning Series, presented by Buell Pro Series Accessories. Aboard his Kosco Harley-Davidson/Buell - Innovative Motorcycle Research Lightning X1, Barnes narrowly edged out Bryan Bemisderfer of Harley-Davidson/Buell of Frederick. With a mere .042 second margin of victory, it was one of the closest finishes in series history.

Barnes took off at the start and lead by 2.3 seconds after the first lap with Bemisderfer, Richie Morris (Hal’s Harley-Davidson Performance Advantage - Daytona Harley-Davidson/Buell), Jason Smith (Smith Brother’s Harley-Davidson/Buell) and Anthony Fania (KSW Cycle Insurance/Liberty Harley-Davidson) all battling for second in the opening laps.

The drafting war began when Bemisderfer came on strong, eventually passing Barnes for the lead on the back straightaway. Several more aggressive passes back and forth between Bemisderfer and Barnes kept the race close, until Barnes pulled off the classic slingshot pass just before the finish that propelled him ahead by a bike length (.042 seconds) to take the win.

“I just had the better bike today. It came right down to the line,” said Barnes.
Fania finished third, ahead of Morris, Smith and Newcastle Harley-Davidson/Buell’s Brian Bodine.
The Formula USA Buell Lightning Series, presented by Buell Pro Series Accessories, is a horsepower and weight restricted Buell-only spec-class.

In the Formula USA Thunderbikes class, which is open to singles, twins and triples of all brands, Buell racer Jeff Johnson (Hoban Brothers - Harley-Davidson/Buell of Appleton) beat Bemisderfer and Suzuki-mounted Tim Hall.

The next Formula USA National Road Race Series event will be held on May 25-26 in Summit Point, W.Va.

FIREBOLT XB9R FINISHES SECOND IN BUELL PRO THUNDER SERIES DEBUT

Ciccotto Second Aboard Firebolt XB9R at Daytona; Barnes Third Aboard Lightning X1

DAYTONA, FLA.  (March 12, 2002) - Mike Ciccotto, aboard the all-new Buell Firebolt XB9R, took second place in the AMA Buell Pro Thunder season opener at Daytona International Speedway despite limited testing and development time. The Hal’s Harley-Davidson Performance Advantage team took possession of their Firebolt just five days before the race, but Ciccotto proved the new bike will be a formidable contender this season.

“This Firebolt is incredible. It's our first weekend out on it and when we get it sorted out, it's going to be really tough for anyone to beat us,” said Ciccotto. “We had to run DOTs in the race because we didn’t have a good set up for slicks yet.”

“It was a good day for Buell. The new Firebolt finished second with street tires and a tail light and the proven X-1 was right behind in third,” said Erik Buell, chairman and chief technical officer of Buell Motorcycle Company.

Former Australian Superbike Champion Kirk McCarthy took first place aboard a Ducati 748RS, while Buell rider Michael Barnes aboard his Kosco Harley-Davidson/Buell - Innovative Motorcycle Research sponsored Lightning X1 took third.

Ducati 748 riders Thomas Fournier and defending series champ Tom Montano rounded out the top five. Tilley’s Harley-Davidson/Buell X1 pilot David Estok, after qualifying second quickest, broke his clutch at the start of the race.

The AMA Buell Pro Thunder Series continue at Fountain, CO, on June 1-2, 2002, for round two of the series. SCREAMIN’ EAGLE NHRA PRO STOCK DRAG RACING TEAM DEBUTS IN GAINESVILLE

Expectations Remain High Even Though Team Doesn’t Qualify for Main Event

MILWAUKEE, WIS. - (March 18, 2002) The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock Bike drag racing team made its debut at the NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida this past weekend. Although the team didn’t make the show on Sunday, their expectations remain high they will become the first V-Twin in a full field of 16 to qualify for a Pro Stock Bike event and become competitive in the series.

“We knew going into the weekend we were not where we wanted to be with the new program. Doing final testing and tuning at the track was very risky business, but we also knew we would learn valuable information under actual race conditions,” said Mike Kennedy, director of marketing Harley-Davidson Parts and Accessories. “While we didn’t accomplish the first part of our mission by not qualifying, we did learn a lot and got fantastic fan reaction and support in Gainesville.”

On Friday, the Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team ran quarter-mile elapsed times (E.T.s) of 7.704 and 7.687 seconds. Saturday morning’s run dropped to an encouraging 7.572 but the team ended the afternoon session with a 7.691. The bump time for Sunday’s show was 7.396.

“Unfortunately, we put ourselves in a tough position, as we haven’t totally fine-tuned this V-Twin package. The good news is we are producing plenty of power, we just need to spend some more time testing and convert this power to much better times on the track,” said team engine builder Byron Hines.

The other good news coming out of the weekend came from rider GT Tonglet, who produced great reaction times (R.T.s) throughout qualifying, and was pleased with the potential of his new ride and the support of Harley-Davidson fans. “The new Screamin’ Eagle V-Rod is a blast to run and I’m happy with our progress,” said Tonglet.  “The fans in Gainesville were great. They were excited we were out there and let us know in the pits and from the stands.”

“Moving forward, the combination of resources we have on this program could not be better,” said Kennedy. “Vance and Hines has an unmatched record in NHRA Pro Stock Bike. This team will figure it out and get us in the show.”

Craig Treble won the Gatornationals Pro Stock Bike final aboard his Matco Tools Suzuki with a .429 R.T. and a 7.248 E.T. at 184.17 MPH.

Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts are inspired by and built in the spirit of the raw adrenaline and power of motorcycle racing, offering both racing-grade and street-legal performance options for the Harley-Davidson motorcycle owner. Visit www.harley-davidson.com for more information.
