NEW AIR SHOW FOR STURGIS THIS YEAR

News from Buffalo Chip

The Annual Sturgis Rally and The Buffalo Chip Campground, recently received national attention when Cher, spokesperson for the Childrens Craniofacial Association, (CCA) appeared on the nationally syndicated radio talk show The Bob & Tom Show.  Cher, in a telephone interview on The Bob & Tom Show's Charity Marathon, described CCA's 2002 motorcycle fundraiser. The fundraiser was born at The Buffalo Chip Campground in 2000, when the Buffalo Chip donated a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which Cher autographed, and CCA raffled. Cher drew the winners name from the Buffalo Chip's stage.  The 2002 Cher autographed bike will be at The Buffalo Chip during this  year's Sturgis Rally. Details about the fundraiser and the bike can be found at ccakids.com.

Getting married at the "Chip":  A portable wedding alter is being built so that you can get hitched anywhere on the campground! Just ask us how, we'll help with the rest.   Contact mike@buffalochip.com

NEW AIR SHOW:  New this year will be the Sturgis Air Show at the Sturgis Air Port, just one mile east of the Buffalo Chip. This is going to be one of the most impressive air shows in the country with some of the best pilots on earth.  You'll be able soon to buy ticket packages that include the air show and a concert at the Chip.

Paul Revere & The Raiders will be back this year on Saturday, Aug. 10 to help the Chip celebrate our American Freedom Day. We urge you to visit www.ridetothewall.org and buy the Ride To The Wall CD. All proceeds go to the men and women who served in the Vietnam War.

Last trip to Sturgis was '99.  But you can rest assured BikerOne will be there in 2002!  If you have never been there you need to make a point of it.  This is "theeeee bike event", where it all started!  A lot of people won't or don't go to these big events because they feel it's a Harley thing.  But folks, it's now an all bike thing!  You see every make and model at all of these events now.  Don't miss the fun because you don't drive a Harley.  Drive thru the country and see Buffalo grazing along side of the road (don't stop to pet them), or Elk, Mtn. Sheep and more.
Sturgis downtown, Mt. Rushmore and more.  The Crazy Horse Memorial is really impressive! Did you know that the Crazy Horse Memorial is the only memorial of any kind in the USA to honor any Native American?

Sturgis is a very small town.  But, I really think that is good because if it were a larger town, like a Daytona, you would never leave the city.  But the great thing about the entire area is that it is nothing but small town.  Rapid City is about 25 miles from Sturgis and it is the Big City in that area!  But, you're missing a lot if you don't head out to Spearfish, Deadwood, Crazy Horse. Rushmore and all of the smaller towns around Sturgis.

REVIEW:  Jacksonville to Sturgis was 2080 miles, each way!  My older brother and I made the pilgrimage and ended up towing the bikes.  We would have loved to ride up, but time was not on our side.  We drove straight thru with only one very brief overnight stop.  I don't think we were at the hotel a full 8 hours.  But it was back in the truck to continue our journey.

HOTELS:  A lot of the hotels keep old towels, rags, and water hoses accessible to bikers.  They know how we are about our bikes and have probably had bad experiences with people taking the towels out of their room.  It's a nice touch.  ROOM RATES:  As you can imagine they're high.  I believe we paid about $125.00 per night at a limited service hotel.  But once again, unless you're going to go camping, that's about average.  CAMPING:  There's plenty of it.  A lot of these campgrounds also offer their own food service.  Some very limited, others offer more.  But camping is reasonable and can be a lot of fun!  But can also be very noisy.

FOOD:  It's everywhere..................Downtown Sturgis there are all of the street vendors cooking sausages, hamburgers, the huge pork chops, etc.  But the entire area has great restaurants everywhere.  Try a buffalo burger for lunch.  And, don't forget the buffalo sausage for breakfast.  It's great!

SOUVENIRS:  Available almost everywhere from the hotels to Main St.  Also see BikerOne's souvenirs.  We can even customize a lot of the items to make it more memorable for you.  See BikerOne's Sturgis Souvenirs!

GAMBLING:  It's everywhere in South Dakota.  Even a lot of gas stations have some form of gambling available.  In Deadwood we visited the Hickock Casino and a few others.  I decided I would loose no more than $50.00................and that's what I did, quickly!  But, if memory serves me, there is a maximum bet of $5.00.  And, I believe that is a state law (unless recently changed).

PATCHES-APPAREL:  Don't be too anxious to buy unless you're under a tight schedule.  You will see significant price differences for the same item.  If you move back a block or two off of Main St., some things will be cheaper.

CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL & MT RUSHMORE:  Defiantly worth the trip.  Great drive and  beautiful scenery.  Very hilly, winding roads with buffalo grazing along the side of the road.  It's hard to believe how large Rushmore is and that it was carved out of a stone mountain.  Both it and Crazy Horse are both very impressive and rather close to each other.  Make sure you see the videos that show you how each was carved, the history, financial trouble etc.  Crazy Horse is still under construction with no known completion date.  The work schedule depends strictly on donations.

SCENERY:  Fantastic!  Especially to a Florida boy.  The entire area leading up to the Sturgis area has these gently rolling hills which if aren't green are gold with wheat.  If you recall the movie "Dances with Wolves" with Kevin Costner, and recall the beautiful scenery in this movie, then you've seen a good part of the area. "DWW" was filmed in this area.

LOCALS:  Very friendly, glad you're there, loves the bikers and love looking at the bikes and talking to you.  They always want to know where you came from etc.  Great people!
